A 29-year-old Penn Yan woman was arrested police say they received a report of a 3-year-old child being found unattended after wandering away from his residence.
Police say that Tia L. Sheldon, 29, of Penn Yan fell asleep inside her home, the child walked down a flight of stairs, exited out an exterior door, and then walked approximately 282 feet north to an address on Chapel Street in the village of Penn Yan.
That is where the child was stopped by a passing motorist, who called police. Police interviewed Sheldon who advised that she was unaware how long her son was missing from the residence.
She submitted to an breathalyzer test, which revealed a .13 percent blood-alcohol content. She was charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
The charges will be answered in Penn Yan Village Court at a later date. The child was turned over to the custody of his aunt.
