Auburn man charged after baseball bat assault at gas station

According to police, a local bystander was credited with restraining an Auburn man who assaulted two gas station employees with a bat Saturday morning.

Ian D. McMahon, 31, of Auburn was charged after he assaulted two female employees at the Auburn Kwik Fill store located at 302 Genesee Street. The original call to police said that a customer had a baseball bat at the gas station, but few other details were provided before their arrival.

Those arriving officers were informed that a customer had gotten the baseball bat away from McMahon, and was holding him for police.

The Auburn Police Department reports that the two female employees were struck multiple times by the aluminum bat wielded by McMahon. He had earlier been removed from the store, and returned with the bat.

The second employee was struck with the baseball bat after she attempted to intervene, preventing the first employee from getting hit again. Police say that thankfully, neither employee was injured too seriously. Both were transported to Auburn Community Hospital with arm, hand and back injuries.

McMahon was charged with two counts of second-degree assault and one count of third-degree possession of a deadly weapon. All of the charges are felonies.

He was arraigned in Auburn City Court.
