Marion woman charged with welfare fraud after investigation into benefits

Wayne County Sheriff Barry Virts reports the arrest of one Marion woman after an investigation into welfare fraud.

Deputies arrested Kathaleen Cortes, 39, of Marion for welfare fraud after an investigation was initiated by the Department of Social Services. Cortes had been working and failed to report the income to the agency, according to investigators.

Cortes received $1,169.00 in benefits that she was not entitled to as a result of the submission of the false instruments and subsquently was arrested for fourth-degree welfare fraud, fourth-degree grand larceny, and first-degree offering a false instrument for filing.

She was released on appearance tickets and will answer the charges in Lyons Town Court.
