Penn assistant succeeds Welch as IC football coach

Ithaca College has dipped into the staff of two-time defending Ivy League champion Pennsylvania for its 10th head football coach.

Dan Swanstrom, a native Texan and 2005 graduate of Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn., was introduced Tuesday as successor to recently retired Mike Welch. Welch retired at the conclusion of the 2016 season with 169 victories in 23 seasons.

Swanstrom will take over the Bombers’ program Jan. 3 following previous coaching stints at Pennsylvania, Johns Hopkins and the University of Redlands.
