DEC to decide next step for Cargill mine shaft

The state Department of Environmental Conservation is reviewing public comments to determine the next step for the creation of a new access shaft at a Cargill salt mine in Lansing.

As the salt mine projects to add 12.3 surface acres, it plans to add a ventilation and access shaft that goes down 2,500 feet. Last week, at the Regional Economic Development Council awards, a $2 million grant was approved to assist Cargill in adding the new access shaft, which is to be equipped with a heavy duty mine elevator, changing room facilities, electrical upgrades and a small equipment maintenance shop.
