Eight of the nine Finger Lakes West boys varsity basketball teams were in action on Tuesday night along with the Newark Reds who hosted Class AA University Prep. The games in the West revealed that no team is safe on any night this winter as three of the four contests were decided by a total of seven points. Full results and more below…
UPrep 75 at Newark 60
Coach Bob Havrilla’s Reds dropped to 0-2 on the young season on Tuesday night but the record is nothing to be ashamed of as Newark stepped out of their Classification to face AA UPrep after opening with Class A Jamesville-Dewitt out of Section III. Newark was able to hang with UPrep and were down just 8 at the half and 11 points after three quarters before ultimately falling 75-60. Brian Sharp found his shooting touch to the tune of 23 points on 7 three-pointers. UPrep was led by Jeenathan Williams who had 19 including his 1,000th career point in the win. Newark will be in action again on Friday night in Seneca Falls when they face Mynderse in a key early season Finger Lakes East match-up that will be streamed live on FL1 Sports.
Dundee 42 at South Seneca 41
Dundee brought their 2-0 record to the Jack Guinan Gymnasium in Ovid and escaped with a 1-point win over the winless South Seneca Falcons after Bobby Straight buried a game winning three-pointer as time expired. Dan Lent’s Falcons were led with 17 points from Devin Rogers and 11 from John Zajac.
HAC 40 at Red Jacket 58
Red Jacket’s Dan Brown went off on Harley Allendale-Columbia on Tuesday night recording the first triple-double of the year in the Wayne-Finger Lakes. Brown finished with a career high 31 points to go along with 14 rebounds and 10 blocked shots. For the Wolves, Jamarr Paisley had 16 and Leeore Intrator scored 15. Red Jacket improved to 2-1 and 1-0 in the FL West.
Honeoye 60 at Marcus Whitman 65
Marcus Whitman picked up a much-needed victory on Tuesday night defeating the Honeoye Bulldogs 65-60 in Rushville. Nick Young had a big night for the Wildcats finishing with 24 points, 7 steals and 5 assists. Riley McLoud added 16 and Burling Allen scored 12 in the win. For the Bulldogs, Cole Loomis scored 21 and Max Yale notched 20 points in the loss.
Romulus 48 at Bloomfield 49
In perhaps the most surprising result of the night, Bloomfield narrowly survived a visit from Coach Joe Pysnak’s Romulus Warriors. Patrick Geitner continued his hot shooting with 5 three-pointers and 21 total points while Bryce Beechler scored 13 and pulled down 9 rebounds for the Bombers. For Romulus, Kyle Bennett had 13 points on 3 three-pointers, Nassir Whitley had 12 points on 4 three-pointers, and Mauricio Mercedes-Riveria scored 11.
In W-FL Girls Action…
Mynderse defeated Red Jacket 59-36 in Seneca Falls thanks to 16 points from Hannah Brown-Trice and Heidi Miller. Red Jacket was led with 11 points from 8th grader Isabella Wilbur and 10 from Alex Mosqueda.
Adrianna Kemp scored 17 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to lead Lyons over Marion, 52-33 at home in the Atwood Gymnasium.
Also on Tuesday night, the Wayne Eagles lost to Webster Thomas, 67-53 in Ontario, Pal-Mac lost by three to Aquinas and East Rochester defeated Sodus.
There was no report posted for Clyde vs. NR-Wolcott, East Rochester vs. Sodus, Gananda vs. Williamson, or Pal-Mac vs. Aquinas.
* EDITOR’S NOTE: We receive more than a handful of complaints regarding the lack of W-FL girls coverage on FingerLakes1.com. Tuesday night is a perfect example of the difficulty we encounter when trying to cover the W-FL girls basketball. Of the seven games played, four of them did not have results posted on the Section V girls basketball website. Parents and fans of these girls’ programs should encourage their coaches to report the scored in a timely manner following their games.
