K9 Truman dies in Ontario County after 10 years of service to Sheriff’s Office

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office reports that K-9 Truman has passed away.

Truman was named in memory of Deputy Truman Becker, who was killed in a motor vehicle crash in July of 1981 while on duty. Truman started his career with the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office in 2005 with Deputy John Peck. In 2008, Truman was assigned to Deputy DiMariano.

Over the course of his career, which spanned 10 years — Truman successfully tracked numerous missing and lost children — as well as criminal suspects. Truman was an ambassador for his agency.

The Sheriff’s Office reports that Truman and Deputy DiiMariano were often found doing demonstrations at schools, community events and Truman was also a fan favorite at the Ontario County Fair.

Truman was a dedicated member of the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office and when Deputy DiMariano answered the radio — so did Truman. Truman retired from service in 2015 and continued to live with Deputy DiMariano.

They say he was a credit to his breed and will be deeply missed.
