Attempted robbery at the Ithaca Commons, police ask for public’s help

The Ithaca Police Department is investigating a robbery, which took place at the Ithaca Commons on Friday evening. The incident occurred shortly before 7 pm, when police were called to the scene the victim had been assaulted, with the suspect allegedly attempting to take her purse.

The victim says that the individual struck her from behind, causing her to fall. Several individuals in the area heard the victim scream when the attacker began struggling with her – but none were able to get there before the assailant had left the scene.

The suspect is described as a black male, possibly a female, who was wearing jeans. The incident happened after sunset, which made identifying the individual difficult.

On October 21st 2016 at approximately 6:54 pm Ithaca Police Officers responded to the 200 block of S Geneva St for a reported assault. When Officers arrived on scene it was learned that the female victim had been attacked while walking towards the Ithaca Commons. The victim reported that she was struck from behind in the head by an unknown person.

When the victim fell to the ground, her attacker continued to hit her in the face and was attempting to pull the victim’s purse away from her. The female victim let out several loud screams, and the attacker fled the area of foot in the direction of Geneva and Clinton St. The victim was able to retain all of her property from the attacker, and suffered minor injuries.

Several people in the area reported hearing the victim screaming. Some came to her aid after the attacker had already fled the area. The attacker was described as a black male, possibly female, wearing jeans and a dark green hooded sweatshirt. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Ithaca Police Department. This incident is still under investigation.
