Geneva neighborhood tainted by toxic metals

Dozens of property owners in a neighborhood of homes and businesses in Geneva, Ontario County, are being notified that the soil in their yards contains elevated levels of potentially harmful arsenic and lead. Residents of the affected area were being urged Wednesday to avoid unnecessary contact with bare soil and to wash their hands thoroughly, especially before eating. The state Department of Environmental Conservation, which disclosed the contamination in a news release Wednesday afternoon, said the tainted soil eventually will have to be removed and replaced with clean fill.
