Fairport couple who rescued 11-year-old in Seneca Lake incident says going out was ‘last minute’

While Gary Gladis Jr., of Geneva, jumped into Seneca Lake to save his 11-year-old niece — authorities say she would tread water for around 45-minutes before being rescued by boaters.

Those sailors say they almost didn’t even realize that 11-year-old was a stranded swimmer.

She didn’t have a lifejacket, according to the pair who was identified as Nancy and John Gilbride. The two are avid sailors and were on their 30-foot sailboat.

The pair said that the trip was a last-minute venture out onto Seneca Lake, but in hindsight — was probably their most-important sail of the year.
