Due to a rise in counterfeit bills showing up in the area, the Ontario County treasurer’s office now has a bill counter that can detect most types of bogus bucks.
County Treasurer Gary Baxter said while the passing of counterfeit bills is a bigger problem for banks, his office gets them too.
“What happens is, if someone brings a counterfeit bill to a bank and we end up getting it from them, the county is out that money,” Baxter said. “We just had a twenty that was counterfeit before we had the machine, so the county was out 20 dollars.”
