One dead on Cayuga Lake after lengthy search for swimmer who went missing

The Tompkins County Sheriff’s Office reports that the body of the missing swimmer, who disappeared near Myer’s Park in Lansing was discovered by divers at 11:31 pm on Sunday.

Deputies say that the original report came in at approximately 3:30 pm on Saturday, as first responders deployed to Myer’s Park in the Town of Lansing. The person was reportedly no longer visible on the surface of the water. Ithaca and Lansing Fire Department’s responded to the scene, as well as assets from Seneca County.

Once confirmation was established that a person was in the water, rescue crews searched the area where witnesses last observed the victim. The New York State Police Dive Team was contacted and responded to assist. Several other area fire department dive units responded to the Myers Park to assist in the rescue and recovery efforts. The NYSP Dive Team utilized sonar to search the lake until about 3:00 am on Sunday.

They were unable to locate the victim, who has been identified as Timothy J. Butler age 58 of McGraw, New York, who was discovered Sunday at approximately 11:31 pm.

Deputies say that the New York State Police Dive Team located and recovered Butler’s body in about 63 feet of water in an area north of Myer’s Park.

Assisting in the recovery efforts were the New York State Police and Bangs Ambulance. Other agencies that provided assistance during the event was Romulus Fire Department, Union Springs Fire Department, Trumansburg Fire Department, Cayuga County Marine Unit, Auburn Fire Department Marine Unit, Onondaga County Dive Team, and the Pine City Fire Department Dive Team.

Original Report: It’s unclear if search efforts in Cayuga Lake were successful, or what the mission is for those dive teams who have been focusing their energy on a portion of Cayuga Lake late-Saturday afternoon.

The first call came in shortly after 3 pm around Myer’s Point in Lansing. While some reports indicated that there might have been a distressed swimmer, it remains unclear at this point who was involved. Multiple units and teams from the Tompkins and Seneca County area had been working on Cayuga Lake.

At 7:30 pm dispatcher’s said that the individual had still not been found. First responders from Lansing, Romulus, Union Springs and Aurora have all been involved with the search efforts, which had lasted hours before darkness fell over Cayuga Lake.

First responders have not indicated whether search efforts will resume on Sunday, or whether the mission will turn to a recovery mission by that time. FingerLakes1.com will have more on this story as it develops over the next several hours.
