The Newark Pilots (22-18) earned a comeback victory on Sunday night, knocking off Jamestown 6-5 at Colburn Park. The Pilots clinched the season series with the win taking five of the eight matchups and also brings Newark within a half-game of the Jammers for third place in the Western division.“It’s nice to gain a couple of games on Jamestown,” Pilots head coach Chris Edmondson said after the win. “But it was also nice for the guys to get back on the winning side. We’ve been on a little slide recently, but I think we’re starting to come together and hopefully we can end the season on the right foot.”Jamestown got the scoring underway with three runs in the fourth inning off Newark starter Ryan Wesson, only two of which were earned. Wesson gave up just the three runs and struck out one, but his pitch count was elevated and he was lifted after five innings.The Pilots score their first runs in the bottom of the fifth when Sam Fragale roped a ball into left field that allowed Chris Sharpe (UMass-Lowell) and Mark Tumosa (UMass-Lowell) to score. The hit was one of three in game for Fragale and it cut the deficit to 3-2.Tysen Fischlin (Skagit Valley C.C.) would come in relief of Wesson and would throw the next three innings without allowing a run. The Pilots would take the lead in the seventh when Darian Herncane (Binghamton) roped a ball down the left field line to score Tumosa and Chris Whelan (Parkland J.C.) for a two-RBI double.“It’s pretty crucial,” Fischlin said of his long-relief appearance. “Especially with the short bullpen we’ve had lately. It was nice to get some work and save the rest of our arms for games later this week.”Newark would go on to add two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth to take a 6-3 lead. Sharpe would drive home Julian Gallup (Niagara) on a sacrifice fly and Tumosa would score Jon Schafer (Santa Clara) on an RBI single for the second run.“They are a really good team and we know they can swing the bats,” Edmondson said. “We knew it was really important to put some runs up in the eighth for insurance and it ended up really helping us out.”Fischlin would come out again to pitch the ninth and would allow back-to-back walks to start the inning and a two-RBI double from Christ Conley (Canisius) would bring the Jammer within one at 6-5. However, Fischlin would get a strikeout end the ballgame with Conley on second to earn his first victory of the summer.The Pilots continue their home stand with an interleague contest as the Saugerties Stallions come to Colburn Park on Monday.
