The National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch, which is in effect for Cayuga, Seneca, Tompkins, Cortland, Chemung and Schuyler counties until 8 pm on Monday. Route 14 in Geneva was closed between Snell Road and Turk Road at 2:19 pm due to a storm that passed through Geneva earlier this afternoon. Officials recommend staying away from the area.The primary threat with these storms that develop during the afternoon hours is damaging winds, large hail, and even an isolated tornado as daytime heating kicks up, according to the National Weather Service.Heavy rain is also possible with these storms, which could lead to minor flooding in low-lying areas.
