Starting Saturday, June 11, the Geneva Community Center will be open from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. to give teens a safe place to spend time on a weekend evening. The Saturday hours are sponsored by a state Teen Clubhouse Grant aimed at giving youths age 12 to 17 a safe and healthy place to spend time. The grant, which provides funding to the Geneva Community Center and a number of Ontario County social service agencies, is intended over time to tap the guidance of local youths in determining what activities will be available during these Clubhouse hours. In addition to the Geneva Community Center, Clubhouse teen hours will be held at the YMCA in Canandaigua and at the Never Alone Club in East Bloomfield every Saturday.Teens between the age of 12 and 17 wanting to enjoy the Geneva Community Center’s games room, gym, computer rooms or other facilities will need to sign in, fill out a short membership form and follow rules of conduct. During Teen Clubhouse hours, the facility will be managed by employees of the Boys & Girls Club of Geneva and current Boys & Girls Club members are welcome to use the facility as well during these hours. Eventually, a teen council will help establish the types of activities and staffing available during these Clubhouse hours.Entrance to the Saturday teen hours is free and the facility is operated as a “drop-in” program, meaning youths are free to come and go throughout the open hours. Eventually, the Clubhouse Grant will expand to serve youths up to 21 years of age.For more information, call the Geneva Community Center at 315-759-6060.
