The Gorham Pageant of Bands is celebrating its 55th year of bringing Western NY student musicians and performers together to perform in band and color guard competition on June 3rd and 4th this year. The event culminates with a parade at 3:00 on Saturday, June 4th through the hamlet of Gorham. There are some changes being made with this year’s pageant. The music performance competitions in jazz, concert band, color guard, etc are still on Friday and Saturday, but this year have been moved indoors to the Marcus Whitman High School. Although the performances have historically been under a tent on the Gorham Elementary school lawn, the move to the high school auditorium is appreciated by music directors and fans alike for the protection from uncertain spring weather and the improved acoustics of an indoor venue. “It’s about the quality of the music” said Polly Simmons, instrumental music teacher at Gorham Elementary school and this year’s Pageant Coordinator.Admission to the music competitions and performances at the high school is free. Concessions will be available at the High School both Friday and Saturday. The annual chicken barbeque on Saturday will be at the Marcus Whitman High School from 11 am-2 pm. Light concessions will be available in Gorham for the parade. Even with the changes this year, one thing will remain the same – lawn chairs will most certainly adorn Main Street Gorham in the early morning hours in anticipation of the 3 pm parade.
