The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Ontario, Wayne, Cayuga, Monroe, Oswego, Jefferson and Lewis counties for the threat of freezing rain over the next 24 hours. For most of the Finger Lakes the Winter Weather Advisory begins this afternoon at 5 pm and extends through the morning commute on Thursday — ending at 9 am. The main threat from this early-spring blast of wintry weather is sleet and freezing rain with mild accumulations.Untreated roads, sidewalks, and parking lots are expected to become slick during this period — which could result in minor problems on roadways. Drivers are urged to exercise typical caution for winter weather conditions. Temperatures are expected to hover in the low-to-mid 30s throughout this period, with the biggest impact being felt along Lake Ontario. Those living south of the Thruway and east of Ontario County will see significantly different conditions, as temperatures will hold steady in the 40s and even exceed the 50 degree mark in some locations. Message from National Weather ServiceA Winter Weather Advisory is typically issued for a variety of winter weather conditions such as light snow, blowing snow, sleet, freezing rain, and wind chills. While the weather will be significant, the word advisory implies that severe winter weather is not expected.Stay tuned to NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite source of weather information for the latest updates.
