del Lago: New name, injunction denied

One day after a five-judge panel of the Appellate Division, Fourth Judicial Department decided unanimously to deny a preliminary injunction — the name of the former Lago Resort & Casino was changed. The new name: del Lago Resort & Casino. In a statement del Lago said that changing the name was something they wanted to do as an organization to fully-embrace and embody the vision they have for the resort, which will serve as a gateway to the entire Finger Lakes region. The statement read in part:“We wanted to share some exciting updates on Lago Resort & Casino. The world-class resort and casino in Tyre, Seneca County, will now be officially named ‘del Lago,’ meaning ‘of the lake,’ as it will serve as a gateway to the magnificent Finger Lakes Region of New York State. The newly evolved name reinforces that the resort and casino embodies the essence of the Finger Lakes Region and is a community steward for the entire area encompassing Seneca County and the great Finger Lakes.”The statement comes at a time when public support for the proposed casino and resort has increased dramatically. The statement continued pointing out that, “Moving forward, you will no longer hear us refer to our project as Lago Resort & Casino as the destination is now officially named del Lago Resort & Casino.”del Lago Resort & Casino Co-Chairman Thomas C. Wilmot, Sr. and Brent Stevens praised the unanimous decision in court the day before the news of a name change broke. They said in a joint-statement issued that they “appreciate the Fourth Department’s decision to deny a preliminary injunction.” Wilmot went on pointing out that, “The Court’s decision is great news for the people of Tyre, Seneca County and the region. It’s certainly great news for the 1,800 people who will benefit from jobs during construction and the 1,800 who will benefit from permanent jobs once Lago opens next year.”Mike Davis, President of the Finger Lakes Building Trades Council, representing 19 local unions with more than 6,000 members, said: “This is tremendous news for the hardworking men and women of the Finger Lakes Building Trades and their families. Coming off of one of the worst years for construction in our area in recent memory any lost time at Lago would financially ruin families waiting to work there. Their quality of life counts too.”del Lago Resort & Casino had made local headlines for recently increasing the workload happening on the site — as developers push to open as soon as possible. The current goal is for the facility to be open by February of 2017, according to developers.
