In partnership with the Women’s Interfaith Institute, Women’s Rights National Historical Park will be welcoming Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mohandas K. Gandhi, on March 19th at 10:00 am in the park’s Wesleyan Chapel. In honor of Women’s History Month, Arun Gandhi will be speaking about his grandmother and her influence, which he wrote about in his book, “The Forgotten Woman: The Untold Story of Kastur – Wife of Mahatma Gandhi.”Arun’s book, co-authored with his late wife, Sunanda, reflects his understanding of his grandmother’s struggle to embrace her husband’s principles. “Mahatma” (meaning “great soul”) Gandhi avowed to poverty and celibacy, utilized nonviolence and civil disobedience in leading India to independence and inspired civil rights movements around the world. Arun grew up under apartheid in South Africa and was the beneficiary of his grandparent’s teachings and witness to the challenges his grandmother faced. Following the talk, Gandhi will hold a book signing. In looking forward to the event, Rev Allison Stokes, PhD, Founding Director of the Women’s Interfaith Institute, said “In dedicating himself to promoting his grandfather’s teaching, Arun travels and speaks all over the world. We are privileged to welcome him to Seneca Falls, to learn about his grandmother, and his own early life.”In collaboration with the Seneca Falls School District, the Women’s Interfaith Institute, and the park, Arun Gandhi has also kindly agreed to speak to the middle and high school student bodies on March 18th.For more information, please check out our website at www.nps.gov/wori or call us at 315-568-2991.
