NWS issues Winter Storm Watch for FLX

A major winter weather event is set to impact the Finger Lakes early this week. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for most of New York. Counties included in the Winter Storm Watch include: Cayuga, Monroe, Onondaga, Seneca, Yates, and Wayne. For those living in the southern portion of our viewing area, Tompkins and Schuyler counties a Winter Weather Advisory has already been issued. Both the Winter Storm Watch and the Winter Weather Advisory run from late Monday afternoon through Tuesday evening. The timing of the event will stay in that window, giving the entire region a variety of conditions. For those in the Winter Storm Watch, the National Weather Service says the potential for storm total snowfall of 6 to 12 inches is possible, especially for those in the western Finger Lakes where more snow — and less mixed precipitation is expected. Monday evening the snow could fall heavily at times, and overnight Monday into Tuesday morning, there could be a period of precipitation change — where some areas experience freezing rain or a complete changeover to rain — before again changing back to snow later in the day on Tuesday.

In addition to the snowfall, winds are expected to gust in the 30 to 35 mph range, which will make travel difficult, especially if the region experiences any freezing rain. Those under a Winter Weather Advisory will see snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches, with the potential for around a tenth of an inch of ice accumulation. Winds will similarly gust to around 30 mph which will add to the travel headaches for the southern tier. The National Weather Service in Binghamton has released an update on the timeframe of the storm, and how it will likely impact the Finger Lakes region. Especially for viewers in the southern tier. For the latest local forecast and live radar images visit the FingerLakes1.com FingerLakes1.com Local Weather Center.Stay tuned to FingerLakes1.com for the latest updates on the winter weather headed to the region.
