Organizers of the thirteenth-annual Musselman Triathlon have announced that the race will begin to offer a swim/bike/run relay team option for 2016.”When we took over the race from Jeff Henderson in 2015 our goal was to change as little as possible, but to solicit participant feedback after our first year and gauge interest in exploring options,” says race director Rich Clark. “We were surprised by the number of people who suggested relays be considered.”Clark, vice president of Buffalo-based Score This!!!, a timing and race production company, suspects that some of the newfound interest in relays may have been driven by the loyalty of Musselman Triathlon participants – and the aging of them, as well.”The truth is, entering our 13th year, we have athletes who started racing with us in 2004 who, an age- group or two later, may not be able to finish a half quite as easily anymore – but they can’t bear to miss their favorite race,” says Clark. “We’re pleased to be able to offer another option to accommodate them this year – and to welcome folks who may be trying out the sport for the first time, as well as anyone else who’s first, or next, Musselman Triathlon experience will be as part of a team.”Musselman Weekend consists of four different races: the Musselman, a half-iron distance race held on Sunday; the mini-Mussel, a sprint distance triathlon on Saturday; the microMussel, a ‘super sprint’ featuring children’s tricycles and Big Wheels-style toys, on Friday evening; and the MusselKids Race, a triathlon for children ages 6-10 and 11-14, also held on Friday evening. The races are staged at Lakefront Park on Friday, and Seneca Lake State Park on Saturday and Sunday. The race has been cited by national sporting publications eleven times in its twelve-year history. The Musselman Triathlon was selected as one of the ‘Top 100 Races in the World’ by Triathlete Magazine in its most recent ‘Editor’s Choice’ rankings. In 2015 it was cited in an article on top races for new triathletes by Women’s Health Magazine. In January Triathlon Business International announced the Musselman had been voted ‘Best Small Event’ worldwide at its TBI/ACTIVE Network Awards Celebration dinner in Marina del Rey, CA.###The Musselman Triathlon is an annual multisport event held in Geneva, NY July 8 – 10, 2016. The event, now in its 13th year, consists of the Musselman Triathlon, a half-iron distance race, as well as the mini- Mussel sprint, the MusselKids race, and the microMussel super-sprint.
