When Ed Collins’ Geneva varsity girls basketball team lost Mia Morrison, Janee Joyner and Becky Smith to to graduation, many predicted a down year for the Lady Panthers in a tough Finger Lakes East League. On Wednesday night, Erin Guinan, Eliza Maher and a roster of talented young players showed that Geneva isn’t ready to roll over and relinquish their league title with a convincing 47-31 victory over the Mynderse Blue Devils. After the win, senior captain Erin Guinan talked about her new leadership role with Kevin Korzeniewski and head coach Ed Collins talked about what motivates his young squad.In boys action, the #1 Mynderse Academy Blue Devils buried 9 three-pointers in the first half in Geneva en route to a 69-54 win in the FL East league opener for both teams. The game also produced our shot of the night as Jake Mein of Mynderse beat the buzzer at the end of the first quarter.In Wayne County action the #3 North Rose-Wolcott Cougars remain undefeated with a 22 point win over Gananda, East Rochester proved they may be the only team that could challenge the Cougars after they dispatched with Red Creek, 65-48, Williamson beat Marion convincingly, and the Lyons Lions dropped their 4th straight to start the season after Sodus hit a late three to send the game to overtime where the Spartans would prevail, 58-56.
