W-FL Thursday: NR-W tops Creek, Newark loses opener

Just two nights removed from their first win over Lyons in seven years, the 3-0 Red Creek Rams hosted #3 North Rose-Wolcott on Thursday night in a key early season Wayne County League match-up. In a battle of junior point guards, it was Tyler Norris’ Cougars who took care of business on the road defeating Nick Klein’s Rams 55-39.The win puts NR-W atop the league standings with East Rochester who defeated Lyons by just 2 points in the Atwood Gymnasium on Thursday thanks to 20 points from Keith Butler and a late fourth quarter steal and transition bucket that produced the two-point margin. Williamson also picked up a win over Sodus in Wayne County action.Also on Thursday night, the Finger Lakes East took a beating during the opening night of the Dale Bardun Memorial Tournament in Victor. #4 Newark opened their season with a 77-52 loss to Wilson despite seven three pointers by junior guard Brian Sharp (pictured, photo by Jim Miranda). Wilson held a 36-28 halftime lead but saw that evaporate as Newark bounced back to take a 45-44 lead with 3:33 left in the third.
