Tim Hortons closes Waterloo location

Tim Hortons in Waterloo has closed. While the news spread yesterday that locations in the Syrcause area had closed – a lot of uncertainty remained about the future of the Waterloo location. So far, it would appear as though the Weedsport location was one of the only Tim Hortons spared between Waterloo and Syracuse, while stores located west of Waterloo appear to be up-and-running completely normally. The company said in a statement that the series of closings, which were not exclusive to this area, were a part of a larger strategy going forward. The statement read, “In line with our vision to deliver a great Guest experience while building and strengthening the Tim Hortons brand, we continuously review the performance of our restaurants. As we build the foundation for accelerated growth in the U.S., we have decided to close some restaurants in New York. We are supporting our Restaurant Owners in their transition and remain excited about the opportunities to expand the iconic Tim Hortons brand in the U.S.”Questions now remain about the future and sustainability of the Tim Hortons brand, and what this means for the company as a whole – since sudden closures were seen in other parts of the country as well, like Maine, where a series of stores – sharing a similar geography like the Syracuse area stores – shut down with no warning. It was also reported that Tuesday night, Tim Hortons CEO Marc Caira appeared to deliver the news that the Syracuse area stores would close in person. Interestingly though, part of that strategy included shuttering a number of stores immediately without any warning. It’s unclear what the larger impact will be on this particular front, but regionally, the number of jobs that will be lost are in the hundreds. The Waterloo location in the Kingdom Plaza on 5&20 was opened and remodeled in the last five years, after the First Niagara bank closed in that location.
