Sonnenberg Gardens to host ‘Behind the Wines’ event

A wine and food event at Sonnenberg Gardens on September 17 will offer the opportunity to sample some of the region’s best food and drink for a good cause.The first ever Behind the Wines will be held from 5:30 to 8 pm on September 17 at Sonnenberg Gardens and Mansion in Canandaigua. In addition to food and drink in a picturesque location, the event will also offer the opportunity to learn about the Finger Lakes’ burgeoning wine industry from local experts, including Peter Bell, winemaker at Fox Run Vineyards, Tim and Sandy Merwarth, owners of Herman J. Wiemer Vineyard, and Art Hunt, owner of Hunt Country Vineyards.The speakers will share insights about what goes into producing their world-class wines—from vine to bottle. They will also delve into the difficulties faced by many in the field, from laborers to winemakers, who speak limited English and the role that Literacy Volunteers plays in assisting them.Tickets are $60 and guests will be able to sample wines from a variety of local wineries, including Hunt Country Vineyards, Ravines, Anthony Road, Billsboro, Hazlitt and Herman J. Wiemer, with beer available from Naked Dove. Sonnenberg Gardens grounds will also be open for guests to stroll and enjoy this historic location.Proceeds will benefit Literacy Volunteers of Ontario-Yates (LVOY). Space is limited.
