Women’s Rights Park hosts history tour along canal

Celebrate with Women’s Rights National Historical Park the history, culture, recreational appeal, and beauty of the New York State Canal System and Erie Canalway Trail during Canal Splash! Women’s Rights National Historical Park will host special programs on Saturday, August 15th highlighting the importance of canal systems to the growth of the United States and New York State.Start the day by joining park rangers on a kayak tour of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal at 9:00 am, leaving from the Seneca Falls Community Center boat launch. Paddle through history as we follow the flow of events that led to the Women’s Rights Movement. The pace will be slow and we’ll be stopping for every eagle and osprey along the way AND, we’ll be locking through Lock 2 & 3 for a total of a 49′ drop! We plan to be on the water for about four hours so please plan your supplies accordingly. Don’t have a kayak? Just call Fuzzy Guppies at 315-539-8848.At 1:00 pm, inside the park’s Wesleyan Chapel next to the Visitor Center, a family concert will be held featuring Dan Duggan, known nationally for his wizardry on hammered dulcimer and guitar, and Peggy Lynn, recognized for her soulful songwriting and extraordinary vocal versatility. Dan and Peggy combine original and traditional songs and tunes with masterful harmonies and inventive arrangements. On stage, their enthusiasm and humor will charm you!At 2:00 pm, join a ranger for an interactive canalside walking tour about the other women of Seneca Falls: the factory women who worked all along the canal in textile mills. How do women’s rights in Seneca Falls go beyond the right to vote? Step off from the park’s Visitor Center at 136 Fall Street and journey along the water to learn about the working waterfront of Seneca Falls. The tour will last about an hour and involve some extensive walking, so come prepared to enjoy our time outside!Women’s Rights National Historical Park is open Wednesday through Sunday from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm.
