Two hurt in Sheldrake Point boating accident

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Friday at 10:16 pm Sheriff’s Deputies responded to Cayuga Lake in the area of Sheldrake point in the Town of Ovid for a boating accident. The boat operator, Daniel Balmer age 45 of 324 Pollard Hill Road in Johnson City NY, was southbound on Cayuga Lake when he failed to see an affixed object and his boat struck a wooden structure and metal light post off the shore of Sheldrake Point. Balmer sustained facial and head injuries as a result of the accident and was transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse via South Seneca Ambulance. Balmers passenger, Marguerite Malone age 35 of the same address, received facial injuries and was transported to Upstate by a South Seneca Ambulance as well. Both were treated and released . Sheriff’s Deputies report that the 2005 Larson 19 foot open bow fiberglass boat sustained heavy damage and was towed to shore. The boat was later towed from the scene and is believed to be a total loss .
