The Wayne County Youth Derby celebrates its 18th year of giving youngsters the opportunity to enjoy angling while offering a little competition. Starting June 13 and ending on July 26, 2015 this year’s event has a different twist for young anglers fishing Wayne County waters. “After talking to weigh stations, parents and young anglers we have decided to add a new division,” stated Chris Kenyon, Outdoor Promotion Coordinator for Wayne County Tourism. “Many young anglers catch their first fish from the shore or casting off a dock. Usually it’s a blue gill, perch, sun fish or rock bass that grabs the worm and the attention of the first time angler. With that in mind the Wayne County Derby Committee has created the “Al SHULTZ YOUTH MEMORIAL CHALLENGE.” To be eligible for prizes in the Al Shultz Youth Memorial Challenge, youths must be between the ages of 4-7 at the time of registration. Angler must catch one of each of the five species: Blue Gill, Perch, Rock Bass, Sun Fish and Smallmouth Bass or Largemouth Bass. All fish must be caught between June 13 and July 26, 2015. Winners will be determined by catching 5 eligible fish.NOTE: Perch must be a minimum weight of 6 ozs. Each fish will be recorded according to date and time recorded on the weigh form.Blue gill, rock bass and sun fish do not need to be weighed but must be taken to weigh station to be entered into contest. The weigh station will record that the fish were caught. “The Challenge Division remains the same,” Kenyon said. “You catch five of the warm water fish to qualify; pike, perch, walleye, small and largemouth bass then the total weight of all five determines the winners. Species is the third division. The largest fish in any division is a winner.” Official Wayne County Weigh Stations: Bay Bridge Sport Shop, Ridge Road, North RoseB-E Fishing Tackle, Route 104, OntarioWarren’s Hook Line & Sinker (formerly Sodus Point Bait Shop) 8487 Greig Street, Sodus PointDavenport & Sons Boat Livery, Resort Road, North RosePort Bay RV Park & Campground, 8346 East Port Bay Road, WolcottApplications for the Wayne County Youth Derby are available at the above bait and tackle shops in Wayne County or by calling the tourism office at 800-527-6510.
