Flag Day Event in Waterloo

The Mary Gahan Tent of the Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War 1861-1865 (DUVCW) will be working to promote Waterloo’s patriotic heritage. They are offering a special Flag Day Program at the DUVCW owned, American Civil War Memorial. The program will be held Flag Day, Sunday, June 14th at the memorial on the corners of Washington and Locust Streets in Waterloo starting at 2:00 pm.Following the Flag Day program all are invited to Mary Gahan’s grave site in St. Mary’s Cemetery, where a member of the Mary Gahan Tent will portray their tent’s namesake and talk of her Civil War experiences. All are invited to The Gridley Inn, 36 West Main Street in Waterloo, for refreshments afterwards. The Star Stone, one of the five major components of the Memorial, had many of the 617 stars re-guilded with gold during a visit by the memorial’s designer, Pietro del Fabro this past weekend. As Mr. del Fabro worked he said, “It is only fitting that we have our memorial looking its very best in light of next year’s events.” When asked, del Fabro said that he and his wife, Maria, are both looking forward to enjoying next year’s’ festivities. A major celebration is planned for 2016, in observance of 150 years of continuous observance of Memorial Day in Waterloo. Waterloo, the federally recognized “Birthplace of Memorial Day,” will commemorate it with style during the many events offered by the Celebrate Commemorate Committee and all it’s organizational partners. For more information about the Flag Day Program, the American Civil War Memorial or to make tour reservations visit the website : Here or call Caren Cleaveland at: (585)703-6489.
