On Monday evening Penn Yan Police arrested James E. Sanford III, age 28 of Penn Yan, for criminal possession of a weapon and criminal possession of stolen property.Sanford is accused of trading synthetic marijuana for a shotgun that was stolen in a burglary in Penn Yan. In addition to the shotgun being stolen, Sanford is prohibited from possessing a firearm due to being a convicted felon.Police were able to recover the shotgun from a storage unit in Penn Yan. Sanford, who was already being held in the Yates County Jail on other charges, was produced in Penn Yan Village Court where he was arraigned on the new charged and released on his own recognizance but remanded back to jail on his previous charges.Sanford is currently being held on $7,500 bail for previous charges of possession of a controlled substance, criminal possession of stolen property, possession of fireworks, and harassment. He is also being held on $1,000 bail for assault and endangering the welfare of a child.
