LunaChicks win, Trevor’s Gift the big winner

The Finger Lakes Luna Chicks won their opening bout against the Assault City Rollers but Trevor’s Gift was the big winner. The team donated $225 to the backpack program that feeds 145 children each week. The money is enough to feed more than 11 children for a month. “We are so grateful to the women on the roller derby team for caring about our kids and for their generosity,” said co-chair Doris Wolf. “We are honored that this is the second year they have donated to our program.”LunaChicks present a check for $225 to Trevor’s Gift coordinators Kaaren Gerlach, left, and Doris and Walter Wolf, right. The LunaChicks name a different charity to benefit from each of their home games. The next game, on May 9, will benefit Beverly Animal Shelter.LunaChick OverTraumatic, left and James Pizura, right, with some of the 110 full-size boxes of cereal the team collected for Trevor’s Gift at its bout on Saturday. The team also asked their fans to bring full-size boxes of cereal to donate to Trevor’s Gift, collecting more than 110 boxes. That will help insure that every child who receives Trevor’s Gift will have a full-size box of cereal to take home at the end of the school year. Because they can be expensive, full-size boxes of cereal are especially prized by the children.Surveys have found that 10.6 percent of the children in Seneca County are food insecure, meaning they don’t know when – or if – they will receive their next meal. They rely on school cafeterias to provide breakfast and lunch. Trevor’s Gift puts a bag of food in the kids’ backpacks on Fridays to provide food for over the weekend. They receive additional food for school vacation weeks. When children have proper nutrition, they are healthier, do better in school and have higher self esteem. The LunaChicks consist of 17 Finger Lakes area skaters, some who have skated since the team was founded in 2012, and some who are recent additions to the ever-growing league. Other bouts for the 2015 season bouts will be September 19th and October 24th at the Lyons Community Center, 4 Manhattan Street, Lyons, NY. Home bouts begin at 6 pm.Presale tickets to the LunaChicks bouts are available from any LunaChick, Rebecca Clark at [email protected], or at the Lyons Community Center – phone (315) 946-6202. Trevor’s Gift relies on the contributions of individuals, businesses and organizations to support its $30,000 annual budget. It receives no government funding. All money donated is used to buy food for nutritionally needy children in Waterloo. All expenses are donated by the volunteers who pack and deliver the food.Tax deductible donations to Trevor’s Gift can be sent to Trevor’s Gift, c/o Waterloo Education Foundation, Main St. Shop Center, Waterloo 13165.
