Tough Turtle returns in Ithaca Saturday April 18th

The Tough Turtle, Ithaca’s premier obstacle course race, provides critical support for healthy children and a healthy planet.Approximately 21% of U.S. children ages 2-5 are either overweight or obese. (Ogden et al. 2014) Currently, only 54% of preschool children are physically active daily for the recommended minimum of of 180 minutes at any intensity throughout the day. (Department of Health, Physical Activity, Health Improvement and Protection 2011). Historically, the most common way for children to be physically active throughout the day is engaging in child-directed outdoor play. However, these opportunities have become increasingly rare in recent generations, underscoring the role of Ithaca Children’s Garden (ICG) in our community as not only critical for developing environmental stewardship, but also for supporting the healthy development of today’s youth. Not only do children encounter an environment designed expressly for kids at ICG, to explore and develop physically and socially, they also get to experience clucking hens, buzzing honey bees, swimming tadpoles, fresh food growing from the vine, and 3-acres of diverse habitat and wonderland. This child-centric environment elicits focused and sustained physical activity from those who play there, accompanied by endless squeals of delight and a sense of awe and wonder. These early days in childhood set patterns that last a lifetime.ICG’s Tough Turtle, Ithaca’s premier obstacle course race, is one gut-busting way that all of Ithaca and Tompkins County can rally for children’s rights to play and be active outdoors, while developing a love of the natural world. The Tough Turtle returns on April 18th, with brand new obstacles designed to deliver the mud, fun, and a tremendous sense of pride in supporting healthy lives, starting with our youngest community members. With 2015’s minimum FundRACING commitment at only $150 – it’s easier than ever to fundraise and support this critical cause.
