Lyons Lions on to States after thrilling OT win in Canandaigua

Late in Wednesday night’s Section V Class C State play-in game in Canandaigua it looked like Lyons postseason run could be coming to an end, down 2 points with just seconds remaining in regulation. But, head coach Zac Young drew up a spectacular play that led to a buzzer beating back door layup from senior superman Damon Hunter to send the game into overtime where the Lions would prevail, 70-64 over Class C2 champs Caledonia-Mumford.Lyons celebrates as the final buzzer sounds in Canandaigua.Damon Hunter continued his relentless offensive assault this postseason with his 5th straight 30+ point game. Hunter finished with 30 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Senior Chris “The Big Teddy Bear” Peay scored 9 points and pulled down 10 boards and Sophomore defensive stopper Daryn Carsewell scored 10 points and grabbed 9 rebounds. Junior Adam VanBuskirk added 11 key points including a huge three-pointer to open the overtime scoring. The Lions are just three wins away from a state championship and one win away from the state final four in Glens Falls.Damon Hunter takes it to the hole for 2 of his 30 points.Next up for Damon Hunter and company is the NYSPHSAA Class C Tournament quarterfinals where they will face Middle Early College out of Section 8 on Saturday at 2:00 pm at Rush-Henrietta High School. The winner will move on to Glens Falls next Friday afternoon to take on the winner of Waterville (Section 3) and another Finger Lakes regional team, Newfield (Section 4).
