Teams prep for Seneca County adult spelling bee

Teams from throughout the county and beyond are signing up to participate in the third annual Literacy Volunteers of Seneca County Spelling Bee. The event will take place at 9:30 a.m. March 21 at the Waterloo High School auditorium. The public is invited to attend to cheer on the teams. Admission is free.Queen Bees, one of three teams from Waterloo Rotary Interact, will compete against the Haflinger Golden Oldies horse owners who will come from Binghamton, Williamson, Branchport, Stanley and Fayette. The Seneca Falls Bees from Seneca Falls Rotary will vie against the Literacy Volunteers tutors. Rounding out the competitors will be Friends of the Seneca Falls Library, Sassy Spellers, Super Spellers, Waterloo Rotarians, and Smiles with Style.“And the word is that two or three more teams will join soon,” said spelling bee chair Bill Judd of Literacy Volunteers. To sign up, contact Judd at 315-539-9757.To add to the fun, there will be a silent auction with an opportunity to win one-of-a-kind gifts, and refreshments will be available for purchase.Literacy Volunteers of Seneca County served 22 adult learners this year with the help of 17 volunteers, said Program Director Kaaren Gerlach. For some, that means help in reading, for others, it is assistance in earning a high school equivalency diploma.
