W-FL Tuesday: Mein hits another winner for Devils

Mynderse sophomore Jake Mein, a call-up from the JV squad two weeks ago, scored the game winner in the final seconds of the Blue Devils win at Midlakes on Friday night and did it again last night in Ontario to beat the Wayne Eagles. The win keeps the Blue Devils in contention for the FL East title but they’ll need Newark to lose a game before the two teams face off next Tuesday night in Seneca Falls. The Newark Reds were uncooperative last night defeating Midlakes by 22 points. Pal-Mac took a seven point victory home from Penn Yan, Waterloo won at Geneva, and Williamson edged Romulus by a single point as Kyle Collinsworth’s Warriors are still in search of their first win in over two years. Collins is questionable for the Reds’ next game against Penn Yan in Newark on Friday. The Penn Yan at Newark game will be webcast live on FL1 Sports at 7:30 pm on Friday. If Newark can defeat the Mustangs, they will clinch sole possession of the Finger Lakes East title.- Mynderse Academy sophomore Jake Mein has been on the varsity squad for just four games but has already notched two game-winning shots for the Blue Devils. On Friday night, Mein put back a Jake Jones miss with :05 on the clock to give Mynderse a one-point win over Midlakes. On Tuesday night Mein scored the go-ahead bucket again, this time with 15 seconds left in the game to give Nick Sciotti’s squad a 2-point victory over Wayne. Mynderse travels to Pal-Mac on Friday.- With their win over Wayne on Tuesday night, Mynderse has locked up the #1 seed in Class C1 for Sectionals which begin in two weeks.- Waterloo may be peeking heading into the postseason. Jeff Panek’s Indians defeated the Geneva Panthers on Tuesday night for their second straight win behind 21 points from their lone senior, Jonathan Jones. Prior to the two wins, Waterloo played first place Newark tight on the road, losing by seven, in a game they were in until the end. Currently Waterloo is the 6th seed in Class B1.- The Romulus Warriors are winless for the past two seasons. There is hope in Romulus though in the form of junior guard David McLean who has been playing well as of late. On Tuesday night the Warriors came oh so close to breaking their 2-year losing streak falling just 1 point short to Wayne County opponent Williamson. McLean had 15 points.- Wayne County action heats-up again on Wednesday night with the top three teams playing. North-Rose Wolcott will host Clyde-Savannah but will be without their starting center Jake Stephenson who will sit out the game after being ejected during their loss to Red Creek last week. Speaking of Red Creek, they will have one of their toughest remaining tests of the regular season as they host Gananda on Wednesday night. Red Creek is tied for first along with NR-W and Lyons who will play Williamson, fresh off their 1 point win in Romulus. Because Lyons and North-Rose Wolcott will face each other on Friday, Red Creek is in position to secure a share of the Wayne County title for the first time in their school history… if they can beat Gananda. The Rams will also need to get by Williamson on Friday night.Upcoming ScheduleWEDNESDAYMarcus Whitman @ Honeoye #2 Naples @ HACRed Jacket @ #8 DundeeSouth Seneca @ Bloomfield#10 Clyde-Savannah @ #6 NR-Wolcott East Rochester @ Sodus Gananda @ #5 Red Creek #3 Lyons @ WilliamsonRomulus @ MarionFRIDAY#4 Mynderse @ #7 Palmyra-Macedon #9 Penn Yan @ #1 Newark * Live on FL1 SportsWaterloo @ Midlakes Geneva @ Wayne#10 Clyde-Savannah @ Marion East Rochester @ Gananda #6 North Rose-Wolcott @ #3 Lyons #5 Red Creek @ WilliamsonBloomfield @ Red Jacket HAC @ South Seneca #8 Dundee @ Marcus WhitmanW-FL Standings through 2/10FINGER LAKES EAST01.
