The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a serious accident near Newark that involved two volunteer firefighters who were responding to a call on Monday morning.13WHAM.com reports that the firefighters are with the Marbletown Fire Department and were responding to a call when their pickup truck went over a guardrail on Welcher Road near Norsen Road and plunged down a 40-foot embankment.Earlier this afternoon police released the identities of the victims and both were young men. Kyle Verstraete, age 22, and Robert Lee, age 24, were heading to the scene of a house fire in Arcadia at the time of the accident.

Both firefighters were taken to the hospital. Verstraete was flown by Mercy Flight to Strong Memorial Hospital with serious injuries.UPDATE AT 4:03 PM: VerStraete is in stable condition and being kept overnight for observations. Robert Lee was released from the hospital with minor injuries.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
