An accident on Route 96 in Phelps late Wednesday morning has resulted in the death of a Phelps woman and resulted in a Waterloo man being taken by helicopter to Strong, and closed the road to traffic in both directions into Wednesday afternoon.According to first responders, a pick-up truck carrying two people veered off Rt. 96 near Hayes Road and struck a tree. Deputies say the vehicle was driven by Martha McCormick of Phelps and was westbound on Route 96 when it crossed over the center line, went off the road, up an embankment and hit a tree.McCormick was taken to Geneva Hospital where she was pronounced dead.A passenger in the vehicle, 69-year-old Ronald Anderson of Waterloo, was flown to Strong Memorial Hospital with complaints of pain throughout this body. He is listed in satisfactory condition on Thursday morning. The FL Times reports:Although Wednesday’s weather was generally sunny, county Undersheriff Dave Tillman said slippery conditions contributed to the crash and possibly black ice. There were two other accidents in the same area prior to the fatal crash, although those didn’t result in injuries. “It appears there was a snow burst and it left a light film coating that left ice on the highway,” Tillman said. “It was a strange occurrence.”The D&C reports:When crews arrived on scene, they found the driver outside of the vehicle. She was in serious condition and was taken to Geneva General Hospital… A passenger in the vehicle was airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital by LifeNet of New York with injuries not considered life-threatening.
