Sheriff David Gould reports the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has taken reports regarding two telephone scams that are currently plaguing Cayuga County residents. The first is the “IRS” scam. The caller claims that they are a Federal Agent from the IRS and tells the victim that they have committed tax fraud or that they owe back taxes. The caller threatens the victim with criminal charges if they do not immediately send money. The second scam is the “Loan Approval” scam where the caller states that the victim has been approved for a large loan but needs other personal information to forward the process.Residents are encouraged to simply hang up on these callers, do not give any information and certainly do not send any money. Most scams involve payments requested via Western Union and most recently Green Dot Cards.
