Local group donates to Geneva area NAACP

The tagline for the East Lakeview Neighborhood Association is “Where family is first” and the association is living up to its motto. With school just around the corner and many families feeling the pinch with new supplies and clothing for the upcoming year, the neighborhood decided to chip in and to truly put all families in Geneva first. “I was very grateful that the East Lakeview neighborhood association could come together and bring support to the community as a whole,” said Edith Wormley, leader of the neighborhood association. As part of the Neighborhood Action Program grant, the East Lakeview neighborhood association has donated $200 in school supplies towards the 14th Annual Geneva Area NAACP Back to School/Stay in School free school supplies giveaway that will take place on Saturday, August 30 from 9:00 a.m. to noon. The event will take place at the Farmer’s Market location, downtown at the Exchange Street parking lot. Children must be accompanied by adults to receive the supplies and adults must have their children with them to receive supplies. Through contributions and donations of others we have gone from supplying 70 area students at our first event (in 1984) to 270 students at our last event,” said president of the Geneva chapter of the NAACP, Lucile Mallard. The event is partly funded by donation to the NAACP through the Canandaigua National Bank’s Finger Lakes Area Community Endowment, FLACE Geneva Area BTS/SIS Funds, and private donations. “I do think every year our event gets better because of more involvement from other funding sources. This is our 14th year, and for the first ten, we funded it from our branch and personal donations,” said Mallard. “We continue to do this to help defer the cost to parents having children in school. The cost of what’s needed by each student can be a financial burden for some families.” For more information on how to make a donation, please call 315-759-3885. You can also make a donation by mailing a check to Geneva Area Branch NAACP, P.O. Box 222, Geneva, NY 14456.
