Seneca Falls Farmers Market report for 7/16

Here is one thing I love about the market…the direct connection between the consumer and the grower. We ask the vendors to email us with any items they’d like us to highlight that they will have at the market each week. I just received an email from a vendor that said the following in response to my question of what he would have at market this week: “Apricots, cherries, plumcots, plums…the cherries will be the last of the season and the best. Osche Wassi plum is quite good. The apricots are quite good also, and the plumcot, Spring Satin, is quite new.” How neat to be able to hear about the fruit right from the grower! Come down to People’s Park tomorrow from 9AM to 1:30PM and talk to the growers who can tell you all about their products…the variety, what it tastes like, how they grew it, and anything else you’d like to know. Just one thing to love about the market, but there are many others that you will discover by visiting the park! Don’t forget that Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP) coupons will be given out to qualifying seniors age 60 and over at the market so come down and get your free $20 worth of coupons to spend on fresh fruits and vegetables at the market! Raspberries, blueberries and blackberries are sure to be available plus a large selection of fresh greens, beets, yellow and green beans, some of the first field tomatoes of the season, and zucchini and yellow squash. And there’s always honey, maple syrup, eggs, cheese, maple flavored popcorn, baked goods, grass fed beef, free range chicken, local beef and pork, jams and jellies and handmade items. Baked goods include homemade breads, sticky buns, whoopie pies, cookies and muffins. Another new product last week was maple coated cashews! Come and see what is being offered this week. And don’t forget to plan on having lunch in the park while you are shopping. Two vendors will be serving up a great local lunch…Schrader Farms Meat Market is a USDA inspected meat market in Romulus, NY and they will be grilling up their own hamburgers, hot dogs and sausages for you to enjoy as a lunch time treat! Their special this week will be a bbq beef special. They will also be selling many of their locally grown and butchered meat products. Come enjoy a meal in the shade at the picnic tables in the park and shop and eat local! Besides the abundance of fresh, just picked veggies and fruits don’t forget about the vintage lavender filled linens, plants in pretty pots, homemade soaps and homemade jewelry. Starting this week and continuing throughout the season for every $5 in tokens that an EBT/SNAP card user purchases, they will receive a $2 coupons FREE to spend on any food stamp eligible items at the market. Come and use your EBT card and get free products! If you purchase $20 in tokens, you will receive $8 in coupons! What a great way to stretch your food dollars to eat fresh and buy local! Stop by the market managers table for more information on the Fresh Connect Program. And pass the word along to anyone you know who has SNAP benefits. Seneca County Cornell Cooperative Extension will be grilling up a stir fry made with many veggies available at the market! Come and get the recipe and the fresh ingredients to make it yourself! Come and meet your neighbors and friends and talk to the people who grow the food you will eat. Pass this email on to your friends, family or coworkers who might be interested. Have them send us their email to be added to this weekly “blast”. Like Seneca Falls Farmers Market on Facebook to get weekly updates. www.facebook.com/senecafallsfarmersmarket The market would not be possible without the support of the Seneca Falls Development Corporation and the Town of Seneca Falls.
