The American Cancer Society RELAY FOR LIFE is the world’s biggest fight to end cancer. When we walk together, we are bigger than cancer. We would like to invite the Tompkins County community and friends to join us in this walk beginning at 5pm on Saturday, July 12 and ending at 5am on Sunday, July 13. Most importantly, we invite ALL cancer survivors in the community to join us at the Opening Ceremony as we celebrate your cancer journey. No matter when you were diagnosed, or where you are in the treatment plan, you are a survivor. We want to CELEBRATE you. We want to REMEMBER the ones who have lost their battle with cancer. And we ALL want to FIGHT BACK.RELAY FOR LIFE is a signature event of the American Cancer Society and was founded in 1985 by Dr. Gordy Klatt of Tacoma, Washington. He ran a track for 24 hours and raised $27,000 for the American Cancer Society. Today these events are across the globe raising funds to support research and programs right here in your local community. As a matter of fact, every year their are researchers at Cornell University who receive funding support! This is a team campout event with music, food, entertainment and celebrations for 12 hours. Teams of participants camp out at Ithaca College track for a fun filled, family night. Symbolizing that cancer never sleeps, teams are asked to keep at least one team member on the track at all times. During the event, teams are encouraged to fundraise at their campsites, creating a fun, family-friendly atmosphere for the community. The thoughtful, moving luminary ceremony begins at dark with the survivors taking the first lap around the track followed by caregivers and teams. In this way we honor survivors and caregivers, remember loved ones lost to the disease, and fight back against cancer. This is a unique experience which joins us together to make an impact. The public is invited and welcome to join the RELAY FOR LIFE as individuals, families, work teams and supporters. Join the RELAY and help in this critical fight against cancer. Your support helps the American Cancer Society save lives by helping people stay well, get well, by finding cures and fighting back.
