The Finger Lakes region is under the gun for a variety of hazardous weather conditions today.Firstly, heat advisories are in effect for the northern Finger Lakes and Lake Ontario Plain. Temperatures here will reach into the low/mid 90s, with heat index values pushing towards or topping 100º.Elsewhere in the Finger Lakes region, upper 80s and low 90s are expected for highs, with heat index values ranging from the low to upper 90s.This level of heat can easily be dangerous, especially since this is the hottest weather so far this year. Avoid outdoor activities from the late morning through the afternoon. Drink extra water, head to an air conditioned location, and check up on the elderly, who can be especially vulnerable in high heat. And never, ever leave a child or pet inside of the car, even for a few minutes!Later this afternoon and evening, showers and thunderstorms will develop in the hot, humid air. Conditions are not as favorable for organized severe weather, but that does not mean there is not a danger. Storms that do form will likely move in clusters with intense lightning and strong, possibly damaging winds. Hail, tornadoes and flooding are less likely, but are not impossible.More active weather is possible tomorrow, though the focus will shift a bit east. This should be the hottest day of the week, with cooler temperatures moving in for the middle and end of the week. For the latest local forecast, conditions, and live radar images visit the FingerLakes1.com Local Weather Center.
