The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Friday at approximately 7:20 pm, Deputies responded to State Route 89 and E. Varick Street in the Town of Varick for the report of a Personal Injury Motor Vehicle accident. Upon investigating the accident, Deputies determined that Phillip Pontius age 68 of 85 State St. in Seneca Falls was traveling Northbound when he attempted to make a left hand turn on to East Varick St. Pontius failed to yield the right of way and struck a vehicle head on. The Southbound vehicle was being operated by Margaret Oshaughnessy age 80, of Amherst, NY.Pontius was flown to SUNY Upstate hospital by LifeNet for the report of internal injuries. Oshaughnessy was transported by North Seneca Ambulance to SUNY Upstate for the report of neck pain. A passenger in Oshaughnessy’s vehicle, Madelene Parker, age 19, of Tucson Arizona was transported to Cayuga Medical Center via Finger Lakes Ambulance for a hip injury.Both vehicles sustained heavy damage and were towed from the scene. Deputies were assisted by the New York State Police, Varick Fire Department, and Romulus Fire Department. Deputies report the investigation is continuing.
