T-Storm risk today as temps & humidity soar

It will certainly feel like summer today, with many areas pushing towards their highest readings so far in 2014 this afternoon.High pressure located off the coast of the Carolinas has the eastern half of the nation in a broad southerly flow. Heat and humidity as the result of this south wind, with temperatures across much of the east pushing near or above 90º today. The Finger Lakes will be on the edge of this dome of heat and humidity, and that also puts us at risk for thunderstorms. For much of the day though, it will just be hot and humid. High temperatures will be in the upper 80s for most, though I would not be surprised to see some 90s pop up.While we roast this afternoon, thunderstorms will fire across Michigan and southern Ontario. Some additional isolated storms could fire in the Finger Lakes, but that would likely not be until dinner time or later. Any storms that do get going before the sun sets will have a severe threat and may contain with strong winds and hail. The storms to our west should form into a squall line by late this afternoon. The big question is how well this line will hold it together after the sun sets and daytime heating is lost, and how it will interact with Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. The highest severe threat from this will be further west, but there is a lot of unanswered questions at this point. Time to wait and watch for more clues as the day evolves.
