2nd arrest made in scam of elderly Cato man

Sheriff David Gould reports the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a second person in connection with a scam which included the taking of over $15,000 from a 90 year old Town of Cato man last year. Charged at 2:00 pm Thursday was Harold E. Monell age 66 of 10636 Short Cut Road in Weedsport. Monell has been charged with one count of Scheme to Defraud in the First Degree (felony). He was arraigned in the Town of Ira Court and committed to the Cayuga County Jail in lieu of $500.00 cash bail. The investigation which began in 2013 has revealed that over an approximate two year period Harold “Hal” Monell solicited money from approximately 178 separate people totaling over $139,000.00. Monell told a few of these people that he was helping a friend with a legal settlement however most of these people were provided with various versions of a “hard luck” story and were led to believe that they were helping Monell with a personal financial crisis. Monell led most of them to believe that he was using the money to pay his mortgage or other personal bills What Monell actually did was give their money to Daniel Humberstone in hopes that Humberstone would someday double Monell’s investment. Humberstone had claimed to be in line to receive a large settlement which never existed. The Scheme to Defraud charge is based on the fact that Monell misrepresented what he was actually soliciting the people’s money for and therefore denied them the opportunity to make informed decisions about where their money went. Daniel B. Humberstone was charged with Grand Larceny 3rd in November of 2013 and remains in the Cayuga County Jail with his case still pending. The case will now be turned over to the Cayuga County District Attorney for prosecution.
