Tompkins Chamber names new president

The Board of Directors of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce announced today that Jennifer Tavares has been named the new President of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce. She will begin her new duties on July 14, 2014. Ms. Tavares recently served as the Director of Economic Development for Chenango County. Michael May, the chair of the board of the Chamber and an attorney with Levene, Gouldin & Thompson stated “On behalf of the Chamber Board of Directors, I am very pleased that Jennifer Tavares has agreed to serve as the next President of our Chamber. Jennifer brings extensive experience and a well rounded background in Chamber work, economic development, and community enhancement to this important position. She is an engaging, inclusive, and proven leader who will bring those qualities and more to the Tompkins County Chamber.” David Hall, owner of National Book Auctions and the chair of the Search Committee of the Tompkins Chamber, said “The search committee was very pleased to recommend to the board of directors of the Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce that Jennifer Tavares become our next president. I know we all look forward to working with Jennifer and helping her transition into this new position over the next couple of months. This is an exciting time and I know that in Jennifer, we will have a fine leader.”Ms. Tavares previously led a chamber of over 300 members, as well as provided business development services to over 350 individuals, 250 micro-enterprises and over 50 large business clients throughout the Southern Tier. She also facilitated the attraction of over $9 million in grants and loans for Chenango County businesses and infrastructure. She received her degree from SUNY Potsdam and completed coursework to become a Certified Economic Developer (CEcD) and a Certified Economic Development Finance Professional (EDFP). “The Tompkins County Chamber of Commerce is a progressive and accomplished business organization, with a great staff and engaged board of directors,” said Ms. Tavares. “I am excited to be joining a dynamic Chamber in a community with so much to offer residents and visitors, and look forward to my new role with gratitude and enthusiasm.”
