Sheriff David Gould reports the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a one car “Serious Personal Injury” motor vehicle accident which occurred at approximately 7:00 am Sunday morning on NYS Rt. 34 at Smithler Rd. in the Town of Cato. A 2011 Hyundai northbound on Rt. 34 failed to negotiate a curve south of the Smithler Rd. intersection, travelled off of the highway and struck the guardrail at the Smithler Rd. intersection. The vehicle catapulted over the guardrail coming to rest north of the intersection. The operator, an adult male, was airlifted via Mercy Flight to University Hospital in Syracuse. The operator was wearing his seatbelt. No other persons were in the vehicle. The Sheriff’s Office was assisted by the Cato Fire Department, CIMVAC Ambulance, Rural Metro Ambulance along with the Cayuga County 911 Center. The investigation is continuing. The victim’s name is being withheld a this time.
