Seneca County Business of the Month Named

The Seneca County Chamber of Commerce has announced thatFinger Lakes Federal Credit Union (FLFCU) has been selected as the Chamber’sApril 2014 Business of the Month. Credit Union Executive Vice President BobMcFadden accepted the award, along with Branch Manager Lee Anne Fox,Assistant Branch Manager Beth McQuilkin, and Marketing Director Pat Ely atthe Chamber’s Business-After-Hours Mixer, held on April 16 at the New YorkChiropractic College.In addition to the Business of the Month presentation, the After-Hoursfeatured catering by event co-host, Chartwells Dining Services, whichprovides in-house food and beverage needs for the college and also offersoff-site services for special events. About Business of the Month: Originally established to serve educators,Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union (FLFCU) was founded in 1967 among a groupof teachers in the Geneva school district when the Social SecurityAdministration Bureau of Credit Unions chartered it as “Geneva SchoolEmployees Credit Union.” In its original days, the Credit Union’s “office”consisted of a desk located in the basement of the former Geneva MiddleSchool. Deposits were accepted by mail or in person to Gene McFadden, thevery first member and manager of FLFCU. The Credit Union grew steadily andbegan adding other school systems to its charter. With such growth, newoffices were soon necessary, and in turn generated a move to the 3rd floorof the school, and then to 48 Castle Street in Geneva. In 1984, with almost 5,000 members and many new employer groups wishing tojoin, the Geneva School Employees Credit Union changed its name to FingerLakes Federal Credit Union. Within a year, relocation was again necessary,which resulted in the move to its current main office, at 27 Seneca Streetin Geneva. With three floors and numerous office areas, this location hasprovided the Credit Union with over 20 years of growth space. In subsequentyears, additional growth led to increased services offered, and theexpansion of two more branches, including locations at Willard, and Phelps. In May of 2009, the Credit Union expanded its field of membership to includecommunities in Ontario, Seneca, and Yates counties. Today, FLFCU is a fullservice financial institution with 15,000 total members, 35 total employees,and over $90 Million in assets between its 3 branches. Offering both onlineand mobile banking, FLFCU is also active with changing technology trends andsocial media- including career updates via LinkedIn, and promotionalspecials offered on Facebook.Actively involved in local communities and projects, FLFCU employees arerequired to perform at least eight hours of community service per year. In2013 alone, staff totaled nearly 1,100 volunteer hours across Seneca,Ontario and Yates counties. The Credit Union also supports a literaryprogram in the South Seneca school district, sponsors the Geneva Readsprogram, and has featured a Bank on Art program – showcasing various piecesof local artists’ work, free of charge. The Seneca County Chamber of Commerce Business of the Month Program issponsored by the Hampton Inn – Seneca Falls. Recipients are chosen on amonthly basis by the Chamber’s membership to recognize organizationalexcellence and/or significant accomplishments in their field.
