The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office reports that on Thursday morning at 7:25 am, deputies investigated a fatal motor vehicle accident on State Route 96 in the Town of Covert.A north bound vehicle being operated by Bernice E. Hammonds, age 49 of Dundee, Florida, veered off the east side of the road striking a ditch. The vehicle then became airborne and rolled over.Hammonds and her passengers were all injured.Front seat passenger Marshall D. Watson age 55 of Collingwood Drive in Rochester and Hammonds were treated at the scene by Trumansburg Fire/E.M.S and BANGS Ambulance, then transported to Robert Packer Hospital. Watson complained of neck pain and Hammonds complained of chest pain.Rear seat passenger, James M. Parker, age 53 of Main Street in Ovid, was flown by Guthrie Air Ambulance to Robert Packer Hospital to be treated for internal injuries.The other rear seat passenger, Willy C Johnson, age 67 of Blue Cut Road in Newark, was pronounced dead at the scene by Seneca County Coroner Paul McPhearson. Deputies report that the accident was caused when Hammonds apparently fell asleep and drifted off the road. Sheriff’s Deputies were on the scene for about 3 hours while the accident was being reconstructed.Deputies were assisted at the scene by T-burg Fire Dept.The 2002 Dodge stratus sustained heavy damage and was towed from the scene.
