The website will be updated with game start times. The season opener on May 10 will start off with a double-header between the Ithaca SufferJets and the Queen City Roller Girls’ Furies and between the Ithaca BlueStockings and the Connecticut RollerGirls’ Yankee Brutals.Fans won’t want to miss this first game of the new season to see if the SufferJets can finally vanquish the Furies after suffering two previous losses in 2011 and 2013. This year’s game promises an even closer matchup between the two teams. As a relatively new sport following its resurgence in the early 2000s, roller derby has evolved from season to season, becoming more competitive and athletic as its skaters further hone their skills and develop new strategies.Since organizing in 2008 the Ithaca League of Women Rollers has grown into a league of more than 40 adult skaters. In 2010 they started a junior league of girls age 8-17. ILWR is one of 234 member leagues that make up the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, and is currently ranked 78. ILWR’s 2014 season starts in March with an away double-header versus the Brandywine Rollergirls in Pennsylvania. For more information, visit www.ithacarollerderby.com.
